My 2013 Canadian Day

My Canadian Day 2013
Depart

The bus station is located at Mount Royal University park lot 3. All the volunteers will gather there, then distribute to different flooding area.  That is for avoiding traffic jam in flooding area. I have to say the city’s job is very organized.

Everybody’s suites are different. Some with rain boot, old fashion paints, some with jeans and golf hat. I got the work suite which normally I use it at my car and backyard.

Volunteer Station

The bus took us to the Volunteer Station, which is located at 4th street with Elbow drive, just beside of Safeway.  We register as different team; indicate your skill, for example: mechanic, electrical, Plummer, cleaner, etc. I go with another 3 people as a group, Sophia, Tom and Nakamura.

My Team

Sophia is Tom’s girlfriend, she want to do landscape job in the future. This is what her parents told me after I met them at lunch time, they also did volunteer.

Tom is a quite gentle guy; he told me that he worked in Beijing for a year.

Nakamura is from Japan, his was evacuated from his home, East Village (downtown east).

About me, originally came from China. So, we built an international team.

Arriving Flooding Area

After walks over a small bridge and couples of blocks, we came to the Mission community.

The whole area looks like a construction site. Mud and dirt covered the whole landscape in the front yard. There’re already several people works there. They’re busy on taking off the drywall, fireplace, floor…

Work

John told us, our task is very simple:  to help him to take out all the things under the water mark (about 1.5m height from floor) of the house.

Nakamura and I decided to help a gentleman to unassembled the fire place. The gentlemen took off the stone first using his gun (I don’t know the name of that equipment, same as a gun.)

We were responsible to clean the concrete on the stones, and then move them to the front yard for future use. Other things are garbage. We need to move them to the backline, where is a garbage pile.

I had construction experience, it’s easy to me to get involve the job. Nakamura looks like some doubt at beginning, but he is smart, after I showed him an example, he quickly knows how to get rid of the concrete on the stone without break the stone. And help me to move the broken staff to the garbage pile. The broken stone and breaks are very heavy, I was wonder my back pain will comes back after the work. (I had a very serious back pain over a month, just got recover a few days.) But later, the fact told me: Nothing happy after I went back to home, and next day… I thought I got blessed.

Sophia and Tom were working in the bathroom; the mud is everywhere, special in the bathroom. The good thing is she wore a rain boots; she can avoid the mud get into her shoes. The bad thing is also she wore a rain boots because a nail went through her rain boots, and hurt a little bit of her feet. Poor girl!

Tom didn’t talk too much, just keep move the garbage one barrel and another barrel. But he is very careful to watch his girlfriend, his hand always be there once she need help. Great guy!

It makes me remember when I was young… oh, look at us now… because busy work? Child? Married too long? or something else?

I don’t have answer. Only shame.

Lunch

Lunch is provided by the Volunteer Station. The hotdog was so delicious. That’s the best hotdog I have tasted up to now. The whole area is still full of dirt in the air. We site beside the road, eating the food with the flying dirt by the running cars. I was getting understand homeless life at that moment.

Sophia’s parents join us at lunch time, they also volunteer at another site. They’re very nice, and looks like very good educated. Idea to help people and give a wonderful Canadian day to ourselves, which made us coming here together.

Nakamura still shows his Japanese knight spirit. He didn’t take lunch; keep work until I came back to the house. I left about 3:00pm. He was still there. Good worker!

Back to Home

My wife took a picture for me before I moved into the door. And told me: “you don’t have to mow the grass today.” That’s a warm bonus. I will take it. I whispered to myself.

A sweet smile rising from inside, could not be controlled to up.

Yes! I got a best Canadian day!
